Single Parenting and Poverty

It takes a lot of determination to be a single parent while coping with the death of a spouse. Single parenthood is difficult especially for women as they have to deal with much discrimination prevalent in the society. Loss of a spouse exposes one to many new challenges. The financial status may change and one may even have to deal with poverty. Read on to know more about single parenting.

Following the death of a spouse, the entire onus of the family falls on the other half. As a single woman it is extremely difficult to deal with the situation especially when the economic condition is unfavourable. It is also unnerving to notice that that single parents fall in the poor category in most of the countries of the world. This is because the situation becomes so insecure and the condition never really comes under control and this is what makes the overall condition of the family so pathetic.

If you look at the statistics derived from across the countries, you will note that on an average salary of a single parent is $28, 000. According to social psychologists, single parents require a huge amount of support from a host of non-traditional sources. This is very important to pull it off. If you are single mom, your focus is required to be distributed into so many faculties that it becomes extremely stressful for her to earn very well as well as rearing the child in exactly the way she had dreamt of. It is always parenting, work and school and in most of the cases there is absolutely no one to support her.

Single parenting is a social as well as an important economic issue as regardless of whether you are man or a woman; single parents are noticed to have this urge to raise a baby all by themselves. With the evolution of the society, the negative aura surrounding single parenthood, this has become a more usual thing.

What are the Societal Factors?

Following are the societal factors which single parents have to cope.

Discrimination

In spite of the acceptance there are a few factors that affect single parenthood families economically. The financial stability gets threatened when she faces discrimination in the hiring process. If the job market scenario is studied, it will be noticed that most of the workforce in an economy comprises of single mothers, still most of the single parent families are found to live the poverty line. This is due to the simple reason that most of these single moms join the blue collar and service jobs.

Loss in Job Market

The other factor is that the woman has to take maternity leave and lose her wages. The situation gets compounded and stressful as she does not have her partner to support her financially, the family thus stands to lose. She also misses out other fringe benefits due to her maternity leave. These factors cause lapses in her employment and sort of prevent her from standing a good stead in the overall job market. Pursuing careers also become difficult due to the same reason.

Lack of Education and Experience

In most of the cases it is found that when women become single mothers, the child is a result of early pregnancy and in these situations, the education is not complete. Or the woman fails to focus on building a good career during the most important years of her life. Thereby, she lacks it in her to apply or compete for the best paying jobs that can take care of her single income family in the desired way. It has been found in several social studies that single parents who do not have a high school diploma are over twenty times more likely to have their families living in poverty.

Health Costs

Single parent families especially those with single moms are found to end up spending more in their hospital bills even if they do not want to. This is because they do not seek or want to save on prenatal care. This affects their health in the coming years and a major part of their limited income dries away in seeking medical care.
