ABOUT BLINDNESS

Parents or caregivers have one of the most important roles in the Prevention of Disability in their children. It starts from the stage of conception to the care of a child and it is most important to understand that a little care and awareness at every stage in life can go long way in prevention of disability. 

Our eyes are the most delicate sense organs. Our eyes play the most important role as the pathway of learning. The eyes can be easily injured or get infected easily. 

There are approximately 45 million blind in the world. Every second one person in our world goes blind, one child goes blind every minute. Out of these, approximately 12 million blind are in India, of these children account for nearly 3 million. 

It is imperative to reduce the life of darkness for as many as possible, particularly as over 80% of the blindness is curable by reasonable deployment of skill and resources in cooperation with modern technology. 

In our country the major causes of blindness are as under: -

Cataract  80.10% 
Corneal scar  3.4%
Glaucoma  1.7%
Refractive Errors 7.35%
