A Prayer for the Hungry

My sister-in-law was teaching her 2 year old son to recite ‘The Prayer to the Lord.’ He started with,
“My father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
 (so far, so good)
Give us this day, our daily biscuit (oops)

So she asked him to repeat the last line. He said, ‘Give us this day our daily bread-stick’
 (oops, again!)
It was only after she had fed him, that he managed to get it right!

My friend from Delhi loves shopping. Especially so when she arrives in Mumbai. Last year, when she had come down, she invited me to lunch. She asked me to come at 1:30 p.m. as she had an appointment with the dentist at 12:30 p.m. When I arrived, he son, Sameer, greeted me at the door saying, “Mama’s not at home.” Although I knew she was at the dentist, I tried to pick up a conversation with this little 4 year old. So I asked him, “Where has your mummy gone?” “Shopping!”, he answered.

Although my sister-in-law has married into a very rich family, her husband believes in standing on his own two feet. He is a bank officer with a moderate income. Her father-in-law owns a Mercedes, whereas her husband drives a fiat. One day, she jokingly told her 5 year old son, “What a lovely, big car your grandpa has. Why don’t you ask him to give it to us.” Vishal promptly replied, “Work hard and earn your own money. Do not take the easy way out.”
