Q: I have two questions. 1. I am considering donor eggs. I have read many articles on women over 40 (I am 40) that run a higher risk of their baby having problems such as Down Syndrome etc… My question is that if I get donor eggs from someone 25-30, will I reduce those risks and would I still be advised to have an amnio test? 2. I am taking a break from fertility drugs for a couple of months to lose some weight and get back in shape. My trainer has recommended pyruvate as a supplement to help my workouts. Do you know of any side effects that could hurt my getting pregnant just from taking these supplements?
A: 1. A 40 year old woman does have an increased risk of having a baby with a chromosomal defect. This is because she has older eggs, which have a higher chance of having a chromosomal error. If you use donor eggs from a young woman, your risk decreases (to that of the younger woman's risk of having a baby with a birth defect.) This means you no longer need an amniocentesis, as the benefit no longer outweighs the risk. 2. None that I have heard of.
