Preventing Childhood Illnesses

Preventing childhood illnesses is the key to a healthy and fit life. Find out how common infections that affect children can be prevented with vaccines.

As a parent you would obviously want to take measures to prevent childhood illness. A healthy body is very important for a healthy life and more often than not, it is in our hands to take long lasting and effective measures that can readily ensure that we are able to ascertain a healthy and fit life. Some very basic regular habits can readily ensure that you are maintaining your hygiene and thereby improving and preserving your well-being. Apart from hygiene, regular
immunization and a balanced diet are few modes to ensure that the child is free from illness.

Common Infections that Affect Children

During the early months of infancy or later years of childhood there are innumerable diseases that are encountered by children. Most of them constitute of bacterial and viral infections. Paediatrics feel that majority of them are so common that in most cases they are sort of unavoidable. Some of them are like:

  • Bronchiolitis
  • An array of skin infections like impetigo
  • Sinusitis
  • Pink eye or conjunctivitis

Preventive Method - Vaccines

The first preventive method is adequate and relevant awareness. Parents need to educate themselves on how the most common infections are caught by the kids and thereby ensure that they take adequate measures to prevent them. Most can be easily countered through checking hygiene and dietary requirements.

You can help the child battle against the infections with ease through regular vaccination programs that are suggested by your doctor. Most of the common infections and deadly childhood and later year diseases that are caused by infections can be effectively countered through programmed vaccinations. Research shows that vaccination not only prevents the infections but also has brought about a considerable improvement in the mortality rates in children.

Vaccinating Children Against Illnesses

Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis - The risk of the deadly trio of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis can be eliminated from the life of the kid through a single dose of vaccine. Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that can lead to breathing issues. Tetanus is also a fatal bacterial infection that ought to be prevented and effectively treated with immediacy. Pertussis is commonly known as whooping cough and can cause serious breathing issues. It can also affect the food pipe, making eating and drinking difficult for the child.

Polio Vaccine - A single polio vaccine can help in eradicating the disease from the face of the earth. Only parents need to ensure that every time the vaccination program is held, they make their kid a part of it.

Flue and Pneumonia - For infants above six months, the flu shot and the pneumonia vaccine are recommended as kids are most vulnerable to these diseases.

MMR Vaccine - The MMR vaccine offers protection against measles, mumps and rubella, which can have dangerous implications on the well being of the kid.

Apart from all these, all the while, families cannot afford to ignore the fact that it is quite natural for children to fall sick. The reason being, that they still have underdeveloped immune system and the propensity of their falling prey to a lot of diseases is just so easy. Therein lies the importance of taking serious and adequate measures so as to ensure that the health of the child is not compromised and look for signs and symptoms that indicate ill health. Timely medical intervention can then be availed, and the illness gets cured with ease. The outlook for diseases that affect children must be broadened and regularly updated.
