Comment: i dont really see anything wrong in giving a baby a pacifier as long as you dont keep it in existence after a year and a half of age. keeping your baby happy is what matters most so why not? Name: Christy Country: poland Comment: My daughter is 4 years old and she still uses the pacifier at night. She is more calm and relaxed. I would rather give her the pacifier than give her drugs to calm down. Life is too sad and violent at times and I am glad she has something of her very own to make her feel secure. It does not harm the teeth because those are baby teeth and once she makes the decision to give it up, it will give her confidence that she accomplished something by herself, not somebody taking it away from her. Name: Tehmina M Yadav Country: india Comment: I think a pacifier is a boon, my cranky month old baby has become calm after being given the pacifier which was recommended by a doctor. Name: Kelly Country: australia Comment: I beleive pacifiers can be effective in soothing young children if the child needs it. One effective way of weaning from a pacifier is at christmas or easter time, and tell the child that the easter bunny or santa claus will be taking the pacifier in exchange for the presents they will bring. Although throwing the pacifier out cold turkey will probably be more difficult, as the child may cry for a week or two straight, in the long run, it will probably be easier for the parent to cut off the dependancy cold turkey Name: Barney Gluckmeister Country: dubai Comment: My kid was perfect until the day I introduced him to a pacifier. The next day he grew and extra finger on his left hand and a nipple on each elbow-oh well. Name: Fneegler Memphilsnarp Country: india Comment: I used a pacifier with one of my two children. Both kids are grown up now. The child did not use the pacifier turned out to be a very rich Doctor. The child that used the pacifer is now in prison and is totaly freaky. Name: Dilan Country: canada Comment: Pacifier use does not reduce overall amount of crying and has been linked with having more ear infections, thrush and dental bills later on. Using it before six weeks greatly increases chance of weaning from the breast. If you are breastfeeding and need help try your local breastfeeding counsellor. If you decide you must use it, put it in a drawer far away from where the baby and you are and only use it when everything else has failed, then you'll reduce chances of thrush, ear infection and future dental work and you'll learn how to soothe a baby without props. Name: laura Country: canada Comment: I believe a soother should not be used in the first 4 to 6 weeks. The baby should do all his/her sucking at the breast. This will bring in the milk fully and ensure baby is feeding 8 to 12 times in 24hrs. Newborns who use pacifors are at risk of becoming dehydrated and losing weight. Name: kaveri Country: india Comment: for those moms who got by without using a pacifier,GOOD FOR YOU! these days my 4 month old is given hers only after i eleminate all other causes of her crankiness and my efforts to cheer her up fails.it really works like magic where all else fails and either she falls asleep instantly or spits it out with a smile in a few minutes when she's done.i see no reason to prolong my babys crankiness when all she wants is a few minutes of sucking time once or twice a day. Name: kaveri Country: india Comment: my baby girl is now three months old and seems to be ready to give up her pacifiers which i introduced to her when she was only a day old,coz i couldnt nurse her due to cracked nipples. today she is a happy and contented child and i think it is thanks to the pacifier that crankiness did not become a habit ever.i dont allow her to fall asleep with it and she gives it willingly when take it away. Name: Susan Country: usa Comment: My baby nursed for over 2 years and also and used a pacifier. Initially I needed the pacifier so that she would not nurse 24 hours a day. I have found the pacifier to be much preferred over allowing any thumb sucking. However, we did limit the pacifier to sleep times and not being used in public, especially as she was getting older than 5 months. Name: RANI MUKHERJEE Country: india Comment: I have a 3 months old daughter who cries a lot but i refused to give her a pacifier cause i feel if the child sucks and finds no milk to"pacify" her she will develop serious behaviour probs later in life.A psychoanalyst will know about this better than me. Name: phoebe Country: usa Comment: If my one month old baby is "sleeping" with a pacifier in his mouth, is he really sleeping? Every time I pull it out after he is "asleep" he wakes and begins to cry. Any suggestions or experiential advice? Name: Savita Mishra Country: india Comment: I have two kids firstone is 3 and half years old and second one is 4 months old. I introduced pacifier for my both children. my first baby when she is small she started to suck her middle finger, immediately i started to give for her pacifier. she was comfortable with that. when she was almost one by herself only she refused to take. second one he needs pacifier only when he wanted sleep..otherwise no...it think pacifier is good thing to give when they want to suck something. Name: DEBBIE Country: india Comment: My baby is 15 months and we have not had a nights sleep because when his dummy falls out he cries for it to be put back in. He wakes approx 8 times a night. Any suggestions about giving the dummy up would be greatly appreciated. Name: karen Country: usa Comment: I am trying to wean 12 month old from pacifier used only at nap & bed time; she is in there now whining (not crying though) for past 10 min when I know she is ready to nap! I'm about to cave in & give one to her but have been recommended by pediatrician to not offer it anymore if she is not used to having one on a regular basis. any advice for a 1st time mom? Name: Dr. Uma agrawal Country: india Comment: i have three grown up children & never tried to push or pull any pacifiers or thumb in the mouth I always tried to go in detail of distres & condemn pacifiers. Name: cleo_shw Country: india Comment: i have twin boys and no help at home. the first six to seven months, i was alone after seven pm, when the day maid went home. using a pacifier was a must for me, although i made sure i consulted our pediat. and several books on the subject. my sons are now a year and a half, and still use pacifiers. for the last ten months, though, i have phased it out from using it whenever they were cranky or colicky, to only during naps and bedtime. yes, they do wake if the damned thing falls out of their mouths, but now what i do is i pick it out of their mouths soon as they fall asleep so that they dont get used to it in their mouths. when they turn two, i plan to take them away cold turkey. if anyone has any tips on weaning from pacifiers, kindly let me know, okay ?:-) Name: SMMMOM Country: usa Comment: My children are adults now but, I chose not to use a pacifier, for either of them. They also never sucked their thumbs. Had I found that the baby needed the pacifier, I certainly would have used it. I just didn't think it was necessary, at the time and I am still of that opinion. Name: Harpreet Singh Country: australia Comment: I have found that pacifiers are great when traveling by air. We put them in the baby's mouth during take off and landing to prevent the baby's ears from popping.
